May 24, 2008; Marshfield, WI: – The John Bell Memorial Race night kicked off the 2008 racing season at the big 1/2 mile. Eugene Gregorich Jr. set the first super late model fast time of the year. Matt Pyburn was the quickest super stock, Mark Zeidler in the motorcycles and Kyle Genett made a clean sweep in the pure stocks.
The first six laps of the super late model feature were led by Travis Stebane. Jay VanDerGeest was on his charge to front taking the lead on lap seven from his seventh place start. Tim Hintz, Chris Weinkauf, Rory Melbinger and Eugene Gregorich Jr. were right behind. Hintz made the pass for second with Weinkauf overtaking second on lap 11. Weinkauf was on the charge to catch VanDerGeest for the win.
Behind them, Hintz held strong in third, and the battle was on for fourth between Melbinger and Gregorich. Weinkauf raced hard on the outside to pull ahead of VanDerGeest for the lead on lap 13, VanDerGeest didn’t give up easily trying to reclaim the lead from the inside lane. Lap 14, Gregorich made the pass on Melbinger stick, taking fourth. Gregorich then began his challenge for the third spot from Hintz. With only five to go, Gregorich took third. Weinkauf held off VanDerGeest for the win, Gregorich third, Hintz fourth and Melbinger fifth.
Adam Krzykowski led the first two laps of the 20 lap super stock contest. Brian Weinfurter led the next ten laps. Matt Pyburn and Mike Gwidt were both moving through the field taking making their passes in the outside lane. By the mid point of the race Pyburn was in heated battle with Weinfurter for the lead.
Weinfurter held the inside lane with Pyburn on the outside, the two had stretched out their lead in front of the field which allowed them the extra time they needed to gather it back up a couple of times as the battle became more heated. Pyburn pulled ahead of Weinfurter as the two left turn two claiming the lead. Pyburn won, Weinfurter second, Krzykowski third, Gwidt fourth and Bruce Stanley fifth.
Mark Zeidler of Ringle , Wisconsin made the transition from his flat-track bike to a lowered motocross bike look easy as he swept the field tonight with fast time, fast heat win and a victory in the feature over his racing buddy; Steve Kasten of Hatley. Marshfield’s Shawn Purkis used a road race riding style to win the first heat over West Bend’s Danny Vrana. The fast and furious racing was marred only by a heat race crash by Clay Johnson . Although he injured his hand he returned to race the feature and put in a seventh place ride.
