June 28, 2008; Marshfield, WI: – The St. Joseph’s Hospital Mid-Season Championship with five divisions racing and kids night at the races was hot with racing action. Chris Weinkauf set fast time in the super late model Miller Lite time trials. Mike Gwidt earned the super stock quick time honors. Jeremiah Strauss was the quickest 4-cylinder in qualifying and went on to win his first ever feature. Kyle Rasmussen topped the junkyard warrior times and Ryan Mork again in the pure stocks. A short shower interrupted the super late model qualifying efforts, however the time was put to good use as the kids stock car rides began as soon as the rain ended.

Rory Melbinger too the early lead of the super late model feature race. John Totzke Jr settled into the second spot followed by Jay VanDerGeest, Justin Switlick and Eugene Gregorich Jr. Gregorich using the inside groove passed Switlick and began to challenge VanDerGeest for third. VanDerGeest pulled ahead and then started to battle on the outside of Totzke for second. Gregorich then moved to the outside lane behind VanDerGeest and worked to take third from Totzke. On the backstretch Gregorich jumped to the outside of VanDerGeest now challenging him for second. Behind the top four, Tim Hintz and Chris Weinkauf were on a charge to the front and were vying for the fourth spot with Totzke. Gregorich caught leader Melbinger in a couple of laps and was pressuring him for the lead. Using the inside groove entering turn one Gregorich drove up next to Melbinger’s door and completing the pass through the corner. Hintz cleared Totzke for fourth and now Totzke had to deal with likes of Weinkauf and Dean LaPointe both running hard to take away that fifth spot. A single caution flew during the 25 lap contest and when the field bunched up for the re-start VanDerGeest chose the outside spot of Melbinger and Weinkauf gained a position by choosing the outside and pulling up along side Hintz. VanDerGeest ran hard on the outside of Melbinger for two laps before clearing him for the second spot. Weinkauf continued to use the outside groove behind VanDerGeest to take third from Melbinger. Weinkauf then dropped to the inside of VanDerGeest in turn three to steal second. With several laps remaining, Hintz began pressuring VanDerGeest for third. A very close battle ensued over third while another close battle over fourth began between Totzke and LaPointe. Gregorich won his second super late model feature win of 2008 and the Beway Race Products feature win award. Weinkauf second, Hintz third, VanDerGeest fourth and LaPointe fifth. Mid-season trophies were awarded by whomever earned the most points on mid-season night. Trophies were compliments of Beway Race Products, awarded to Gregorich first, Weinkauf second and Hintz third.

Special thanks to Jay VanDerGeest Cattle and Hartlebens’ Custom Cropping Service for sponsoring the additional super late model payout for the season.

The super stock feature race started with rookie Greg Matthews leading the first lap. Matt Raykowski then took over for lap two with Mike Gwidt and Brian Weinfurter hot on his heels. Weinfurter moved to the outside groove passing Gwidt and then taking the lead from Raykowski a couple of laps later. Adam Krykowski raced fourth and a tough battle over fifth started between Mark Langreck, Greg Matthews and Bruce Stanley. Raykowski and Gwidt continued to jockey back and forth over the second spot, with Gwidt finally taking over. Krzykowski then began his chase for third from Raykowski. Gwidt began to run down Weinfurter for the lead. With only a few laps to go, Weinfurter suffered engine trouble and was forced to retire from the race. Gwidt assumed the lead and took his first ever super stock win and the Krings Motorsports of Arpin feature win award. Raykowski second, Langreck third, Stanley fourth and Ray Karl Jr fifth. The super stock mid-season trophies compliments of Beway Race Products first place was Gwidt, Raykowski second and Weinfurter third.

Lots of two, three and four-wide racing action packed the Scott’s Bumper to Bumper and Budweiser 4-cylinder feature. Josh Ludwig jumped out to an early lead, but Steve Hauser didn’t let him get away chasing him down and taking over the lead several laps later on the inside lane. Jeremiah Strauss was making his way to the front, passing Ricky Brandl for third. Kyle Opelt then moved up and started to challenge Brandl and Ludwig for third. Strauss was making up time on leader Hauser and moved to the outside of Hauser in turn three taking away the lead at the stripe. Meanwhile Opelt had cleared both Brandl and Ludwig for third. Don Dunow was making headway and grabbed the fifth spot. Opelt chased down Hauser and after several laps running on the outside lane he inched ahead of Hauser. Strauss won his first ever 4-cylinder feature. Opelt second, Hauser third, Brandl fourth and Dunow fifth. The Marshfield Visitor & Convention Bureau mid-season trophies were awarded to Strauss, Opelt and Hauser respectively.

The junkyard warrior feature was led by Buddy Barrow first. Dustin Paul jumped out to second with Matt Phelps third, Shawn Carpenter fourth and Tim Anderson fifth. Carpenter after making it three-wide on the outside for several laps was running third and looking for second. Carpenter then dove to the inside of Phelps to take away second and then the lead. Kyle Rasmussen was quick to move from the back to the front and running third. Marc Baldwin was right on Rasmussen’s bumper, but Rasmussen still managed to take second from Phelps. A few laps later Phelps regained the second spot. The only caution flew when Baldwin’s engine blew up and had to be towed to the pits and then during that time Phelps began having mechanical difficulties and pitted. With only two laps remaining on the re-start, Carpenter led, Anderson passed Rasmussen for second. Carpenter won his first ever feature race, Anderson second, Barrow third, Rasmussen fourth and Paul fifth. The junkyard warrior top three mid-season trophies compliments of Humbird Jackets & Embroidery Werks were awarded to Carpenter, Rasmussen and Anderson.

Gary Haarklau led the early part of the pure stock feature. Kyle Genett and Ryan Mork were both on the hunt for the lead from the back to the front and chased down Haarklau. Genett tookt he outside of Haarklau entering turn one. Mork looked to the inside of both of them as they entered turn three, but thought better of it and backed out. Mork’s patience paid off as he gained the second spot the following lap. A few laps later, Mork was on Genett’s bumper for the lead. First he tried the outside with no avail. Then he moved inside pulling up to Genett’s door. The two battled lap after lap over the lead with Mork able to take the spot. Mork won, Genett second, Haarklau third, Dean Ashbacher fourth and Coletta Gomes fifth. The mid-season trophies compliments of the Marshfield Visitor & Convention Bureau went to Mork, Genett and Haarklau respectively.
