Marshfield Celebrates Destruction!! By Mary Langreck

July 3, 2004; Marshfield, WI: - The First Eve of Destruction in 2004 was sponsored by Bauernfeind Business Technologies/NEC Digital Solutions and WGLX 103.3FM. Racing included 1-Man Cruisers, 2-Man Cruisers, Relay Race, Forward/Backward Racing, 2nd Over the Line Race, Burn Out Contest, Tire Race and Trailer Racing. After only a few of the events were completed Saturday night, the rest of the evening was forced into postponement due to rain.

Of the events completed on Saturday night, Sam Sudduth of Pittsville was quick timer in the 1-Man Cruisers. The 2-Man Cruisers also getting a night of qualifying that was taken by the team of Szykowiak and Pionek. Both Cruiser divisions heats were completed with Sam Sudduth in the 1-Man's and Boyer and Clark taking the 2-Man.

Next was an IROC Saturn race sponsored by Seubert Inc. and the group of women drivers took to the track for five laps. The IROC Saturns are six identically prepared cars that can be rent from the speedway to race.

The freestyle burnout contest took to the frontstretch next. After the seven participants showed their stuff for 30 seconds, they were all brought back so the crowd could declare a winner. After voting by way of cheers, it was clear that Jason Teatz in his Camaro was the winner.

The last event completed on Saturday was the Tire Race. Over thirty competitors took to the 1/2 mile track with object of removing someone else's tire. Once the competition was reduced, the cars were sent to the small track and then down to just the front straightaway. The only car left with a tire at the end of it all was Steve Erdmann taking the win.

The rain was too heavy at this point to continue. All spectators and competitors were invited back for the remainder of the show on Sunday.

Sunday's events started with the completion of the Cruiser features. The 1-Man Cruiser feature was led for the most part by Sam Sudduth. Matt Cournoyer was racing second and chasing down Sudduth for that lead. At the checkered, Cournoyer pulled ahead for the win. Sudduth finished second, Dave Knauf third, Steve Erdman fourth and Mike Denny fifth.

The team of Szymkowiak and Pionek dominated the 2-Man Cruiser feature. They led the entire race for the win. Boyer and Clark finished second, Davis and Miller third, Heggebo and Hoeper fourth and Frane and Bargender fifth.

A few of the burnout competitors from Saturday night came back to burn again for the crowd.

Next was another Tire Race. This time Nathan Hummer of Marathon, who took second the night before, came out the winner.

The three Forward/Backward heats were next with the top two advancing to the feature. Jeremiah Strauss of Neillsville won the feature event.

The Relay Race was won by none other than the team of Rodney Feltz and Fran Esser.

A first time ever event here at the speedway was the second over the line race, which was won by Rodney Feltz after he pushed another competitor over the line.

A soccer/football game was added to the show at the last minute. A victim car of Rodney's was used for the ball and two teams lined up to see which could push the car over the opposing teams goal line.

"Hot Rod" Rodney Feltz then began to set up for his stunt. The plan was to drive a limo up a ramp, over eight cars, through two motorhomes and land into two boats. After carefully setting everything up. Rodney got into the limo, buckled up and made a practice pass in front of the stands with the limo. The next time by though, it was a go as the limo sailed off the ramp and right through the motorhomes. With almost no damage to the limo, Rodney plans to bring it back for the Eve of Destruction on August 28th.

One of the final events of the night was the trailer race. After some interesting trailer themes were viewed by the fans, it was smash 'em and crash 'em. At the end of the race, Fran Esser was the only car moving with a trailer. He then ended that by driving it right into the remains of the motorhome.

Another event also added at the end was a mini demo derby with any remaining cars. Four were able to make it out and the two at the end, Jeremiah Strauss and Steve Erdman finished off their cars with one hard head on collision.

Finally it was time for the Fireworks Finale. Thanks to Specialty Fireworks for another great show.
