Holzhausen Wins Super Late Feature, Pettis 2005 Champ!
By Mae Schultz |
September 10, 2005; Marshfield, WI: - Cautions changed the fates of drivers in every feature race of
the season championship night at Marshfield Super Speedway. Steve Holzhausen, Brian
Weinfurter, Jeremiah Strauss and Cody Meyer all took home feature wins.
Jay VanDerGeest was leading in the Super Late Model feature until a dramatic
crash which involved John Frazier, Joe Kryzykowski and Tim Hintz caused a caution. After
the caution, Steve Holzhausen started in fourth place, but soon charged up to second. Then
with 18 laps to go, he snatched the lead on the outside groove. After a couple of laps he
had a considerable lead and kept it until the checkered flag flew. Behind him, Ben Pettis,
Jeff Weinfurter and Charlie Menard were fighting for the follow-up spots. With six laps to
go, Menard took third place on the outside. In the next lap he used the inside groove to
take second. Menard tried to close the gap between him and Holzhausen, but didnt
have enough time. Holzhausen took first, fast qualifier Menard took second, championship
winner Pettis took third, Weinfurter fourth, and Gary Back was fifth.
Andy Simonis pushed to take the lead in the first five laps of the Super Stock feature and
he was able to gain a nice lead. But luck wasnt with him because a caution allowed
Brian Weinfurter to catch him for the win. The caution happened with 12 laps to go. On the
restart, Weinfurter started fifth. He had worked his way up to second place when another
caution happened with eight laps to go. At that point, Weinfurter was right on
Simonis tail. They were neck and neck for a couple of laps. But finally with four
laps to go, Weinfurter stole the lead on the inside groove. Weinfurter took first,
championship winner Simonis held on to second, Matt Pyburn took third, Colin Wilcott
fourth and Cale Laessig fifth. Fast qualifier Bo Bennish finished seventh.
Jeremiah Strauss also took advantage of a caution to catch the leaders in the 4-cylinder
feature. With 12 laps to go, after the restart, Strauss charged to the front of the pack.
With nine laps to go, Strauss was already third with Greg Blount and Dale Louze ahead of
him. In the next lap Strauss took first on the outside. Strauss and Steve Hauser, who had
moved up to second place, battled hard for the lead for the rest of the race. In the last
lap, the lead was up for grabs. But, Strauss squeaked by with the win, Hauser second,
Keith Wirtz third, Derk Hauser fourth and championship winner JJ Flick took fifth. Fast
qualifier Steve Stewart finished sixth.
Cautions were littered throughout the 1-man-cruiser feature. Todd Hoeper took the lead in
the second lap. He held it through a couple of cautions, but Cody Meyer eventually took it
from him on the inside groove. Meyer was able to hold the lead through the remaining
cautions and a confusing finish where a lapped car thought he was in the lead lap vying
for the win. In the end, Meyer won the race and the championship, Justin Moore charged for
second, Hoeper took third, Wayne Dietz fourth and Chris Anderson fifth. Fast qualifier
David Knauf finished seventh.
The winner of the 2005 Ford Mustang Pace Car was Angie Mallak.
Rodney Feltz won the second ever bus race after two cautions from buses hitting the wall
in turn four.
