Chris Weinkauf Wins His Second 2007 Super Late Feature!
Back, Opelt & Zuelke Victorious!

By Mae Schultz

August 4, 2007; Marshfield, WI: - The CarQuest, Jack Fischer Memorial night of racing was postponed by a day compliments of mother nature, but the racing was second to none. Pete Kempf set the quickest CarQuest super late model lap for qualifying, and was his first appearance here in 2007. Brian Back earned another CarQuest super stock fastest lap. Derk Hauser earned his first Bill Dunow Memorial fast time award in the 4-cylinder division. Kyle Rasmussen was the quickest junkyard warrior in qualifying.

Timing was definitely everything this Sunday at the Marshfield Super Speedway. The ominous yellow flag and other unpredictable events dramatically altered the fates of drivers in almost every feature race of the evening. But in the end, Chris Weinkauf took the Super Late Model feature win, Brian Back took the Super Stock feature win, Kyle Opelt took the 4-Cylinder feature win and Jonathan Zuekle ended the night with his Junkyard Warrior feature win.

The CarQuest super late model feature started out very well for Justin Switlick. He began in third place and was already able to charge into second and then first place in the first lap of the contest. Switlick kept his lead through an early caution and restart in the fourth lap. He maintained for many laps, but meanwhile, Chris Weinkauf was working his way up from the back of the pack . By lap eight he had taken fourth place. And in lap 14, he charged into third and then second place and was on the chase for the lead. He used the outside groove to rip the lead away from Switlick in lap 16.

Weinkauf was in the lead, but Switlick was still breathing down his neck. That would all change in lap 23. Pete Kempf, who was aggressively trying to squeeze to the front of the pack, tapped the back of Switlick sending him into Tim Hintz, who was driving in third. Switlick, who has started the night with such promise, ended it with his nose in the wall. Kempf was sent to the back of the pack when the field restarted. On the restart, Weinkauf kept the lead. Hintz went wide and dropped towards the back of the pack. Weinkauf held out for the checkered and the Krings Motorsports feature win award, Eugene Gregorich took second, Ben Pettis third, Jeremy Switlick fourth and Jay Vandergeest fifth.

In the CarQuest super stock feature, lapped traffic failed to yield to the leaders causing confusion and affecting the outcome of the event. Early on, Chad Scholl was able to maintain his pole start. But it didn’t last for long. After a couple of tries at it, Brian Weinfurter stole the lead in the front stretch of lap six. While race fans were watching the action up front, Brian Back had quietly pushed his way from the back of the pack to fourth place. He continued to pick of cars one by one.

Back’s golden opportunity came in lap seven when lapped traffic failed to move out to the way for the rest of the pack to pass. Back pounced during the confusion to take second place. Side by side action with Weinfurter lasted for several laps. With three laps to go, Back again worked the front stretch and nabbed first place. Back won the race and the Beway Race Products feature win award, Weinfurter was second, Rick Grunden third, Randy Emmerich fourth and Chad Scholl was fifith.

Yellow flew in the 4-Cylinder feature, again affecting the fates of drivers. In the first lap, Eric Haring pounced immediately from second to take first place. In lap six, Ricky Brandl took second on the inside. He challenged Haring for the lead, trying the outside groove. In lap ten, just as Brandl was about to strike for first, the caution flag flew because a car in the back had spun out.

On the restart, Kyle Opelt nabbed first. Then, in the next lap, there was yet another caution. On that restart, Haring was in second and Brandl had fallen to fifth place. Opelt kept his lead on the restart and sailed away from the rest of the pack. Opelt took the checkered and the Westside Service feature win award, Jeremiah Straus second, Erin Schlough third, Haring fourth and Donald Dunow fifth.

The junkyard warrior feature was the only “smooth” race of the night. Already in the first lap, Jonathan Zuelke had stormed from the back. He took it three wide on the outside for first place. He dominated for the rest of the race. Kyle Rasmussen, who had also started in the back, came up on the inside in the second lap to take third. One lap later, he used the inside again for second. By lap nine, Rasmussen was right on Zuelke’s tail. But Zuelke was able to hold him off for the win, Rasmussen had to settle for second, Wayne Elmhorst was in third, Marc Baldwin in fourth and Matt Phelps in fifth. The top three finishers earned trophies, compliments of Humbird Jackets & Embroidery Werks.
