Marshfield Super Speedway Race Report

Gregorich Three for Three!
By Mae Schultz

May 19, 2007; Marshfield, WI: - While the weather was calm, the racing was anything but on Sternweis & Sons Concrete race night at Marshfield Super Speedway. Eugene Gregorich, Jr continued his domination of the CarQuest Super Late Model series, nabbing his third win in as many races this season. In both the CarQuest Super Stock and the 4-Cylinders Division, the yellow flag changed the fates of drivers. Rick Grunden took advantage of a caution and took the win in the CarQuest Super Stocks. Brad Conant took his first feature win in the 4-Cylinders and was lucky to be ahead of a major collision in the last lap of the race. Jonathan Zuelke beat out his fellow Junkyard Warriors for the checkered flag.

Gregorich bested the qualifying times again the Super Late Model division. Brian Back claimed another super stock fast time, but by less than four hundredths of a second. Jeremiah Strauss was the 4-cylinder quickest timer. Jonathon Zuelke took two for two of the Junkyard Warrior fast times for the season.

At first it seemed like Gregorich’s recent luck in the CarQuest Super Late Model feature might have waned. Out of the gates, Cale Laessig took the lead on the outside from Dean LaPointe and even started to work away from the pack of drivers. Joseph Scholze started in fifth but had pushed his way to second by the second lap. Chris Weinkauf moved from a seventh-place start to third by lap five. Unfortunately for Scholze, he lost steam and fell out of the top five after the fifth lap. But while all this movement was happening up front, Gregorich was quietly on the hunt from his fourteenth starting slot. He finally pounced in lap 10, taking the lead from Laessig in turn two. Once he got the lead, Gregorich ran with it, pulling away from the pack in lap 13. Laessig tried to hold off Ben Pettis for the second spot for several laps. They raced side by side, but in lap 16, Pettis won the battle. Gregorich won the checkered and the Krings Motorsports feature win award, Pettis was second with Weinkauf following in third. Tim Hintz finished fourth and Laessig topped out the top five in fifth.

In the CarQuest Super Stock feature, Adam Krzykowski quickly charged his way from the fifth spot to snatch the lead in the second lap, passing Mark Langreck, Marv Flick and Chad Scholl.. As he pulled away from the others, it seemed like he might have the race wrapped up. Meanwhile, several Flick, Langreck, and Scholl began fighting it out for the runner-up spot, while trying to hold off the likes of Brian Weinfurter, Rick Grunden and Travis Zvolena. By lap 10, Grunden forced his way from ninth place to take third place from Brian Back, who had claimed the position from Zvolena on lap seven.

With Back breathing down their necks, Grunden and Weinfurter were racing side by side for second. But all bets were off when the caution flag flew due to a collision. Taking advantage of the restart, Grunden stole the lead from Krzykowski in lap 14. Back came around Kryzkowski on the outside to take the second spot. Back tried to use the same trick to take the lead right before thGe checkered in turn four. But, he swung too wide. Grunden kept the lead winning the Beway Race Products feature win award and Back finished second. Krzykowski had to settle for third. Randy Emmerich finished fourth and Brian Weinfurter fifth. Grunden picked up bonus pay from RZ Builders LLC and the rest of the bonus pay went to eighth place finisher Scholl. See details for RZ Builders bonus pay below

Brad Conant started from the poll in the 4-Cylinder Feature and defended his spot for the entire race. He had already pulled away in the first few laps. But the real action was behind him. In the lap two, Bo Bennish was in second and Steven Hauser in third. In a nail biter, they were neck and neck for several laps. In the sixth lap, Bennish had clinched second but continued to fight for it throughout most of the race. By lap 12, Kyle Opelt had snuck his way up from fourteenth to third place. Right after the white flag flew, Opelt made a push to overcome Bennish. But the two cars collided sending the field of cars scattering around them. Since the white flag had flown, the race was called. Bennish and Opelt finished at the back of the pack because they were both involved in the collision. After the dust settled, Brad Conant was named the winner, Donald Dunow second, Derk Hauser third, Steve Hauser fourth and Ricky Brandl fifth.

Junkyard Warrior Jonathon Zuelke quickly took command of the feature in the second lap by zipping between the two top cars to take first place. He dominated the rest of the race, easily racing away from the rest of his fellow warriors. Kyle Rasmussen took second in the fourth lap and kept it. Marc Baldwin finished third, Matt Phelps fourth and Roger Kochrane fifth.
